(Xx) Continental School Painting of the Virgin and Child, After Pompeo Batoni (1708–1787)

1900 - 1920
Description

(XX) Continental School Painting of the Virgin and Child, After Pompeo Batoni (1708–1787)

Period: Early 20th century Continental School

Title: The Madonna with Child

Medium: Oil on panel

Artist: After Pompeo Batoni (1708-1787)

Provenance: from a UK auction house and private UK collection .

Overall measurements with the frame are 57 cm x 46 cm x 5 cm and the painting itself measuring 39 cm x 29 cm

A 20th century, oil on wooden panel painting in the classical style and after the painting by Pompeo Batoni which is housed in the Galería Borghese.

Batoni's style took inspiration and incorporated elements of classical antiquity, French Rococo, Bolognese classicism, and the work of artists such as Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain, and especially Raphael. As such, Pompeo Batoni is considered a precursor of Neoclassicism.

This early 20th century painting follows the original one very tastefully in our opinion.

Condition report: We have removed the painting from its original frame and the glass and refitted into the same frame. The painting appears to have never been removed from the frame and is in excellent original condition.
