Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Regency period, British manufacturers refined the process of layering paper with heat and lacquer to create lightweight, durable homeware. Firms like Jennens & Bettridge established a reputation for producing lacquered trays decorated with detailed hand-painted landscapes and elaborate gilt borders.

These trays were constructed by pasting sheets of paper over shaped wooden moulds, pressing them under high pressure, and baking them. Once dry, the items were saturated with linseed oil, painted with dense black japan varnish, hand-painted with oils, and finished with leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces often feature maker stamps or impressed marks on the reverse, such as those from Jennens & Bettridge. Additional signs include fine gilding, smooth lacquered surfaces with mild natural craquelure, and substantial weight resulting from dense paper compression.

A painted tray can be displayed upright on a custom metal stand placed on a sideboard, mounted directly onto a wall using specialized plate hangers, or positioned horizontally in the centre of a low table to group smaller accent objects.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and keep the object away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and liquid moisture. Avoid chemical solvents, water, or abrasive polishes that can dissolve the original lacquer coat and degrade leaf gilding.
