Description

During the nineteenth and early 20th centuries, the Kordi tribes were reknowned for the superb, lustrous quality of their wool and this can be seen in this stunning little 'tubreh' or storage-bag made circa 1900.

The wool glows in the soumak weave, with the row of coloured fringes at the bottom easily mistaken for silk! The quality is simply amazing.

Woven by Kordi tribes in the region of Darreh Gaz in Khorassan Province, this tribe were of Kurdish origin, forcibly moved to this area by Shah Isma'il in around 1522-1523 in order to protect the Khorassan region of Persia from the incursions of Turkmen and Uzbek tribes.

This beautiful little bag arrived from Khorassan a few weeks ago and after a good bath, has cleaned up beautifully. It is complete with madder-red plain-weave back and although it has two tiny stains, this doesn't detract from such a weaving that was intended purely for utilitarian use and never for sale!
