Persian Zoroastrian Embroidery, Circa 1870, 1.87m X 1.89m

Description

Zoraoastrian textiles are indeed rare. This striking embroidery was produced in Isfahan around 1870 and is replete with Zoroastrian symbolism. Worked on a cotton background in wool, the central roundel is surrounded by rows of charming repeating motifs, including botehs, miniature lanterns and even chickens! Note the large scale botehs in the corners of the field which frame the composition. Note also that the design is mirrored on the top and bottom half suggesting that it was probably made to be used on a table or dais. The subtle colours are easy on the eye, including the liberal use of a fuchsine dye which suggests a date of around 1870. Generally good condition, the original embroidery is almost completely intact. A very collectible item that would also work in contemporary decorative settings.
