Georgian Oak Hanging Corner Cupboard

18th century
Description

A good quality oak corner cupboard dating from the late 18th / early 19th Century. It has an unusual outward pointing front with two panelled doors and brass escutcheons. The doors open to a shelved interior with three shaped shelves and it comes with its original working key.

It is in good condition with a wonderful rich patina. The hinges have been replaced at some point but suit the piece well and are strong and sturdy. There are of course signs of age and use, some old knocks and marks and a minor old split in the top cornice (see photo) but no major damages and overall it displays well. It has been cleaned and lightly polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, Georgian hanging corner cupboards were crafted to make efficient use of room corners for secure storage. Typically made from solid native hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, they feature panelled doors, brass hardware, and interior shelving.

These cabinets were predominantly built using solid oak with peg-and-tenon joinery, raised fielded panels, and hand-sawn timber backboards. Cabinetmakers attached the doors using cast brass H-hinges or butterfly hinges secured with hand-cut screws.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed surfaces, irregular saw marks on the back panels, natural timber shrinkage near panel joins, and original brass escutcheons or hinges with aged patination.

Mount the cupboard at eye level in an alcove, hallway, or dining area to display glassware or store tableware. The deep warm tones of the oak contrast cleanly against muted contemporary wall colours like sage green or charcoal grey.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the direction of the grain. Avoid placing the item directly above radiators or in humid environments to prevent wood movement.
