Description

A beautiful Worcester circular dish / shallow bowl with their stunning mirror finish "wet" blue, or gros bleu, ground, reserving a large central circle boldly painted with a pair of "fancy" birds in a simple landscape with berried tree and a scattering of birds up in the sky. Striking raised gilt decoration framing the reserve and radiating into the blue ground with scrolls, arabesques and graduated dashes. Gilt rim and blue crescent mark to the base, c.1770.

It measures 19cm (7 1/2") wide and 4.1cm (1 5/8") high.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration. There is a firing fault line in the glaze which can be seen on the reverse, appearing only under close inspection as a short fine scratch to the front below the grass and a fine craze line to the side. Minimal handling wear to enamels or gilding, a stunning example.

First Period Worcester, also known as the Dr Wall period spanning 1751 to 1783, represents the earliest production era of the Worcester porcelain factory, renowned for soapstone-fortified soft-paste porcelain and hand-painted decoration.

These pieces were crafted from soft-paste porcelain containing steatite soapstone, finished with a rich underglaze cobalt wet blue glaze, polychrome enamel painting, and honey gilding.

Authenticity is indicated by a characteristic greenish or straw-coloured translucency when held to light, hand-painted decoration with minor variations, precise foot rims free of glaze, and period factory marks such as a fretted square or crescent.

Display the dish vertically on an acrylic or brass stand inside a glazed cabinet, mount it within a decorative plate wall arrangement, or position it as a focal accent on a sideboard.
