Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire flatback figures are lead-glazed earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the Victorian era. They feature a flattened, unpainted reverse side designed specifically to sit flush against a wall or chimney breast above a fireplace mantel.

These figures were produced using press-moulded white earthenware clay. Once fired, they were coated in a clear lead glaze and decorated by hand using overglaze enamel paints and metallic lusters before undergoing a final lower-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples generally feature a small release hole at the base or back to prevent explosions during firing, display glaze crazing, and show signs of hand-painted enamel wear. They are typically unmarked on the base, as potteries rarely stamped these mass-produced items.

Position flatbacks in pairs or as standalone statement pieces on a fireplace mantel, bookshelves, or a sideboard top. Their distinct silhouettes pair well with both traditional English country house decor and modern maximalist shelf displays.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid immersing overglaze-painted earthenware in water or using abrasive chemicals, as harsh cleaning can strip delicate cold-painted details and enamels.
