Description

An outstanding and rare exhibition quality, French 19th century free standing serpentine shaped boulle engraved brass and red tortoise shell antique bureau plat, writing table in the Louis XV style. The table has blue and green coloured enamel inlays and still retains its old maroon leather top with gilt tooled detail.

The table has exceptional deeply shaped cabriole legs which are ebonised on the insides with magnificent quality deep cast scroll leaf and cherub bronze gilt chased mounts and feet. The frieze of the table is fitted with an oak lined drawer and cast acanthus leaf mouldings with four demi-god mounts to each side.

The table frame is made of oak which again is a sign of quality.

The table has two worn oval paper labels:-

Boulle work was popularised in France during the reign of Louis XIV by artisan Andre-Charles Boulle and continued through revival periods in the nineteenth century. The technique pairs sweeping Louis XV curved contours with intricate inlaid metal and tortoiseshell marquetry.

Traditional Boulle construction utilises carved timber, usually ebonised, layered with cut brass and tortoiseshell marquetry. The pieces are finished with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and often feature a inset leather writing surface.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut brass marquetry, finely chased cast gilt-bronze mounts, and hand-fitted drawer joinery. The underside and framing typically show genuine wood oxidation and construction marks consistent with nineteenth-century cabinetmaking techniques.
