Originating during the Italian Renaissance, the credenza was initially a long, low piece of furniture used in aristocratic households for food preparation and taste-testing before serving. Over time, it evolved into an essential piece of storage furniture characterised by solid timber construction and moulded panel doors.

Italian craftsmen primarily utilized native hardwoods such as walnut, chestnut, and poplar. Walnut was prized for its dense grain, rich deep tone, and durability, often finished with natural beeswax or spirit varnishes to enhance the natural figure of the timber.
