Antique Victorian Upholstered Buttoned Back Mahogany Lounge Fireside Arm Chair C1880

19th century
Description

Antique Victorian Mahogany Buttoned Back Lounge Chair.

A very usable & decorative lounging chair.

We are offering for sale this lovely condition Victorian C1880 classically shaped, buttoned back lounging chair made from solid Mahogany. This lovely chair features a scrolled back to turned gallery shaped arms with a scratch moulded frame. The chairs stands proudly with its turned front legs and stands on all of its original brass castors on brown porcelain wheels with ornate ferrules to the forelegs. This moderately sized chair also features its beautiful original lightly faded French polished finish which we have just enhanced by carefully cleaning and waxing.

The chair has been reupholstered at some stage (Vintage upholstery covering) in a quality blue Moquette floral material with contrasting braid to match the weave . This material is a very forgiving and hard wearing material, however it does show some slight signs of wear on the front of the seat. This chair is structurally solid, in good order with no loose joints, the material, inner padding and sprung seat have been checked and are in good condition with no clunking. The chair is comfortable to sit in and is ready for its new home.

The material is used so is not perfect, however, we love how it looks.

The material can be left as it is or it could be fully upholstered to your taste. We would be able to quote for reupholstering this chair for you if you enquire.

Please note this item is in very good condition for its age but does have signs of wear and tear, however, we feel that these points are which adds to part of its charm and character with it being antique.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the 19th century, Victorian buttoned armchairs are characterised by deeply tufted or buttoned upholstery, solid timber framesoften mahogany or walnutand comfortable, inclined backs designed for lounging or fireside seating.

These armchairs were typically constructed using solid mahogany, oak, or walnut frames, coiled steel springs, natural horsehair padding, and woven fabrics such as damask, velvet, or patterned cotton.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved wood elements, original brass or iron castors, traditional hand-tied coil springs, and signs of age or wear on the timber underside and joins.

A Victorian armchair can be incorporated into a contemporary living room or study as an accent seat, paired with clean-lined side tables and minimalist lighting to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting and fabric fading, dust the woodwork regularly with a soft cloth, apply natural beeswax to timber elements, and vacuum upholstery using a soft brush attachment.
