Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this Japanese Boxwood Fukurokuju Okimono to the 1900s.
The figure is very finely carved from a single piece of dense tightly grained boxwood, which is a very difficult medium to carve and shows that the artist who produced this fine okimono was a master craftsman artist.
Fukurokuju is depicted in a standing position.

He is dressed in simple robes, tied at the waist. In one hand he is holding a large fruit and in the other he is holding a large, gnarly, ornate staff with a hanging scroll.
The boxwood has developed a lovely rich golden colour with a darker patina in some places.
