Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brule-parfum or cassolette is a decorative vessel crafted to burn incense, dried aromatics, or scented pastilles. Fragrance escapes through a perforated cover, making the piece both functional and ornamental within historical interiors.

Empire period examples typically combine mercury-gilded bronze (ormolu) with dark patinated bronze, porphyry, or marble. The contrast between bright gilding and dark substrates emphasized Neoclassical architectural details.

Authentic Empire pieces feature mercury gilding with hand-chased surface details, classical iconography like ram heads or paw feet, and heavy cast bronze components secured with period-appropriate threaded rods and square nuts.

A cassolette functions as a symmetrical accent on a fireplace mantelpiece, console, or sideboard top, paired with books, modern framed art, or contemporary stoneware to contrast classicism with modern forms.

Dust gilt bronze gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to avoid scratching the surface gilding. Chemical solvents and abrasive cleansers should be avoided as they remove original patination and mercury gilding.
