Provenance: From a private London collection
This monumental late 17th, early 18th century Italian School, oil on canvas painting depicts a scene from Handel's Tamerlano - an opera seria in three acts which tells the story of the defeat of the Ottoman emperor Bajazet and his enslavement to the ruthless Tamerlano. In this scene, Asteria, in an attempt to reconcile with her father, Bajazet, draws a dagger and reveals her plan to assassinate Tamerlano during their first embrace.

Another scene from the opera Tamerlano, by Italian Baroque painter Andrea Celesti (1637–1712), is in the collection of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation in Berlin. Painted circa 1700, the painting depicts a victorious Timur, in exoticised dress, seated at a table, his retinue before him and Bajazet in a cage held aloft by numerous figures. An etching after the painting is in the collection of The Royal Collection Trust.

The present painting shows stylistic, compositional and tonal consistencies with the broader Venetian school of painting and exhibits similarities to Celesti's work, in particular the artist's depiction of Esther Before Ahasuerus, a scene taken from the bible story in the Book of Esther. Along the bottom of the present work the word TURCA is written, providing further confirmation of the subject of the painting as well as its Italian origins.

Condition report: The painting had been restored to a good level of condition. The paint surface is even. There are areas of lateral infill associated with old repairs when lined. We estimate the lining to have been carried out circa 40 years ago. There is fine craquelure throughout. The canvas is in good condition and the paint surface is even and stable.
