Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A banjo barometer, also referred to as a wheel barometer, is a wall-mounted instrument developed in the late 18th century housed in a casing shaped like a banjo. It contains a mercury column connected to a wheel and pulley system that operates a pointer on a circular dial to record changes in atmospheric pressure.

Georgian barometers were constructed primarily from mahogany, rosewood, or satinwood veneers over pine or oak frames. Decorative elements included shell or paterae marquetry inlays, cast brass finials, glass thermometer tubes, and engraved silvered brass dials.

Authentic George III barometers typically feature architectural details such as swan-neck or broken-arch pediments, brass urn finials, and shell or star marquetry inlays. Dials are generally hand-engraved silvered brass, showing historical lettering styles and age-consistent oxidisation.

Due to its vertical orientation, a banjo barometer is suited to narrow wall spaces, staircases, or the area between tall windows. Hanging the piece alongside classic framed portraiture or above a dark timber sideboard complements traditional decor schemes.

Keep the barometer away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high-humidity areas to prevent the wood veneer from warping or splitting. Dust the timber casing with a dry microfiber cloth, and ensure mercury-filled tubes remain upright to avoid air bubbles forming in the mechanism.
