Pair of 19th-century Country House Large Cast Iron Boot Scrapers

19th century
Description

Really large pair of 19th-century Country house size boot scrapers. Each scraper has a crack in the end, see photographs. (This is reflected in the price) I think this is probably a design fault as all four ends have them. As long as they are not dropped from a great height I can't see them getting any worse. I dare say that this is why this design is rare. I've never seen anything of this size before. Coalbrookdale design

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique boot scraper is an architectural hardware fixture, popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to scrape mud and debris from shoes before stepping indoors. Often installed near entryways, these pieces frequently incorporated integrated catch trays and cast iron decorative motifs.

19th-century boot scrapers were primarily manufactured using molten iron poured into sand moulds, creating solid cast iron fixtures. They typically featured a central raised scraping blade positioned above a dished base designed to collect scraped mud.

Authentic period boot scrapers display subtle moulding variations, heavy visual weight, and natural surface oxidisation or pitted patination rather than smooth modern powder coating. They often show wear consistent with age along the upper edge of the scraping blade.

Antique boot scrapers can be positioned outside a front porch, back door, or boot room to serve their original utilitarian function. Alternatively, they can be displayed as architectural sculpture flanking a doorway or within an entryway display.

Cast iron antiques intended for outdoor display can be treated with microcrystalline wax or linseed oil to prevent excessive rust while preserving existing patina. Accumulated dirt can be gently brushed away using a soft stiff-bristle brush without harsh chemicals.
