Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Silver menu holders, or place card stands, gained popularity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries for formal dining tables. Designs incorporating Scottish motifs such as thistles reflected the Victorian interest in Highland culture and Scottish revivalism.

These items are predominantly constructed from sterling silver or white metal alloys, frequently featuring cast or pressed thistle motifs. Decorative accents often incorporate faceted glass or native gemstones representing traditional Scottish stones like amethyst and cairngorm quartz.

Authentic period pieces generally feature hallmark stamps indicating silver purity, maker marks, and city marks. Additionally, construction details such as hand-soldered easel hinges and period-appropriate stone settings distinguish original pieces from later reproductions.

While designed for displaying dining menus or place names, these items can be repositioned on sideboards, desks, or shelving to hold small photographs, art cards, or business cards.

Maintain silver accessories by polishing gently with a soft microfibre cloth and a mild silver polish. Avoid submerging set stones in harsh cleaning solutions, as chemicals can compromise paste settings or damage delicate silver solder joints.
