Antique Half-saddlebag, Qashqa'i Confederation, Ard Kapan Taifeh, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

19th century
Description

The stylised 'scorpion' depicted on an attractive ivory central lozenge send a powerful message to live scorpions - keep off!! Whilst living with the Qashqa'i back in the early 1970s, I remember an elderly Qashqa'i woman explaining to me that weaving scorpions into their rugs and bags was to ward off live scorpions! I can say that sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't!!

This extremely attractive half saddle-bag was made by the Ard Kapan taifeh of the Qashqa'i confederation towards the end of the nineteenth century and is in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A khorjin, or saddlebag face, is a hand-woven pile or flat-weave textile created by nomadic tribes in South-West Persia to carry goods across pack animals. The decorative front panels were frequently separated from the central bridge and retained as individual collectable textiles or wall decorations.

These textiles are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, warp, and weft structure. The yarn is tinted using traditional plant-based and mineral dyes, resulting in rich, lightfast colours such as indigo blue, madder red, and natural ivory.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted asymmetrical or symmetrical construction, natural dye variation known as abrash, and distinct tribal iconography such as latch-hooks, stepped diamonds, and stylized animal or floral symbols. The wool foundation and hand-bound selvages further indicate genuine nomadic origin.

A saddlebag face can be custom framed or mounted as textile wall art, placed as a small accent mat, or converted into a structured floor cushion to introduce historic texture, deep tone, and geometric pattern into contemporary spaces.

Display the weaving away from direct sunlight to minimize dye fading, and vacuum gently without using a rotary brush attachment. For spills, spot clean immediately with cold water and mild neutral detergent, and seek professional care from an oriental rug specialist for deep cleaning.
