Pair of 19th Century Painted Chinese Yoke-back Chairs

19th century
Description

This pair of late 19th-century pink painted chairs features stylishly simple yoke-back designs. Crafted from wood, these beautiful chairs retain their original pink paint, which has developed a wonderful distressed appearance over time due to exquisite patinas.

Known as hat chairs, the top rail was often used to hang a hat while seated, adding to their charm and functionality. Entirely handmade and originating from Shanxi Province in China, these chairs date back to the 19th century.

The high backs of these gorgeous chairs make them a real statement piece, perfect for an entrance hall or landing. While they are in excellent condition, they do show minor signs of age and use, which only adds to their character without compromising their overall structure or appeal. With a seat height of 52 cm, these chairs remain timeless statement pieces.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chinese yoke-back chair, often referred to as an officials hat chair, is a traditional form of Asian seating characterised by a curved top rail resembling a wooden yoke or formal headwear.

These chairs were crafted using complex joinery methods, including mortise and tenon joints constructed without metal nails, and finished with layers of lacquer or paint over a timber frame.

Authentic pieces feature visible hand-carved mortise-and-tenon joinery, natural wear patterns along the lower footrests, and layered, age-matured paint finishes or patinated wood surfaces.

Pair these chairs as side seating in an entryway, position them alongside a contemporary dining table, or use a single chair as a sculptural accent in a bedroom or living space.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth, avoid liquid cleaning agents that may lift flaking paint, and keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage.
