Scagliola is a decorative technique originating in 17th-century Italy that imitates inlays of marble and semi-precious stones. It gained widespread popularity across Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries as an artisan craft for architectural columns, pedestals, and tabletops.

Scagliola is constructed using a mixture of selenite plaster, glue, and natural colour pigments. This composite material is applied to a frame or timber structure, polished with stone, and finished with oil or wax to replicate natural veined marble.

Authentic scagliola feels warmer to the touch than natural marble and lacks the cold density of solid stone. Close inspection reveals seamless pigment variations and occasional small surface imperfections or minor flaking characteristic of plaster-based composite work.
