St Peter Holding the Keys of Heaven Religious Needlepoint Antique Picture

1900 - 1920
Description

A very refined and elegant picture depicting St Peter holding the keys to heaven. The face of the Saint and his hands are made of very expressive and fine printed paper details, while the clothes, the key and the beautiful and shaded background are made in masterful needlepoint embroidery.

The Aurea of St. Peter and a decorative oval mount around the oval plus other decorative details are created with small silver beads.

Original wooden ebonised frame and backboard.

One of the most iconic symbols of Christianity - and of the Roman Catholic Church in particular - other than Jesus and Mary.

Jesus gave an important power to Peter: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Mattew 16:19

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, devotional needlework gained widespread popularity in European homes. Practitioners crafted figurative scenes from biblical narratives and saintly portraits, often utilising Berlin woolwork patterns and glass bead enhancements.

These textiles were generally worked on stiffened canvas backings using dyed wool or silk yarns. Fine decorative details, borders, and halos were frequently embellished with clear or coloured glass seed beads stitched directly onto the fabric.

Authentic period examples display hand-stitched irregular tension on the reverse side, natural age-related discolouration on the backing canvas, and period-appropriate dyes that soften over time. Early beadwork often shows tiny hand-blown glass beads strung on linen or cotton thread.

Framed needlepoint art can be displayed as part of a gallery wall alongside dark wood antiques, or mounted as a focal piece in a hallway or study to add texture, history, and visual interest.

Keep textile art out of direct sunlight to prevent UV fading of the wool dyes. Ensure the piece is framed behind UV-protective glass with acid-free mounting materials to shield the fibers and beads from moisture and dust.
