Description

STUNNING 19thc FRENCH BARBIZON SCHOOL IMPRESSIONIST LANDSCAPE OIL PAINTING

Brief Description:

This is an exhibition-quality original 19th-century French Barbizon School Impressionist Oil on Canvas Landscape Painting depicting a rural woodland with farm buildings, tall trees, and a natural pond.

The outstanding painting and the original gesso scrolled frame are in as good condition as they were when it was painted in 1893!

It is a magnificently detailed scene and so very lifelike.

The original work is signed and dated 93 (1893).

Barbizon School Info:

In the middle of the 19th century, a group of French artists set up a home in the village of Barbizon in the Fontainebleau forest, some forty miles southeast of Paris. They made paintings of landscape scenes and peasant agriculture, with special attention given to naturalistic lighting effects. After the village became their centre, they became known as the Barbizon School.

The beginnings of the Barbizon School can be traced back to the 1824 Salon de Paris in which the English painter John Constable exhibited three paintings and was praised by several prominent French artists of the time, including Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix. He wrote of the reaction: “They are struck with [the paintings’] vivacity and freshness, things unknown to their pictures.” The Hay Wain became one of Constable’s most successful paintings and was singled out for a Salon gold medal and moved to a prominent place in the exhibition.
