Characterful Welsh Side Table

18th century
Description

There is much to like about this little table: the clean lines, almost devoid of decoration, apart from the simplest of shaping to the frieze and the scratch moulding around the two little drawers and edge of the frieze on the sides.

The top, which is beautifully figured and patinated, has great character, the front right hand corner with myriad cuts suggesting it was used for chopping kindling.

The positioning of the pulls, set low on the drawers, is charming. The table has twisted over time to compensate for the wear on the two rear legs and this also lends it great charm. The medium brown colour is greatly enhanced by a fine patina.

Probably North Wales, circa 1780-1800.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A traditional Welsh oak side table is a regional country furniture piece crafted in Wales during the 18th and 19th centuries, typically featuring a compact rectangular surface, frieze drawers, and sturdy oak construction.

These tables were constructed primarily from native solid oak using traditional joinery techniques, such as mortise and tenon joints, timber pegging, and hand-dovetailed drawer construction.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-planed surfaces, pegged joint construction, original keyholes or brass hardware, and a dark, naturally oxidised patina across the oak grain.

A dark oak side table functions well in a hallway, landing, or living space, serving as a functional surface for lamps, ceramics, or artwork to create a balanced contrast against modern decor.

Dust the wood surface regularly with a dry cloth and apply clear beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber, ensuring the piece is kept away from direct heat sources or extreme humidity.
