19th century
For Sale by Butchoff Antiques Ltd. (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

An Empire Style Fauteuil

In the Manner of Jacob-Desmalter (1770-1841)

The single armchair constructed from mahogany, the tablet toprail with central cast brass mount of two opposed swans holding a banner, the back, arms and seat covered in red neoclassical fabric, down scrolled arms with anthemion carved motifs, on stiff leaf carved scrolled sabre legs.

French, circa 1880

The chair and its upholstery are directly inspired by the bergère made by François-Honoré-Georges Jacob-Desmalter for Queen Hortense when she ruled over Holland alongside her husband Louis Napoleon, the French emperor's brother. Her son would later also become Emperor of the French as Napoleon III.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire style furniture is defined by neoclassical symmetry, dark mahogany or walnut timbers, bold architectural proportions, and brass or gilt-bronze mounts inspired by Greco-Roman and Egyptian motifs.

Empire fauteuils typically utilise solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, carved walnut, cast brass or ormolu mounts, and woven silk or damask upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-joined construction, heavy hardwood framing, cast brass appliques secured with period-correct fasteners, and classical motifs such as laurels, lyres, or crests.

An Empire fauteuil can serve as a focal accent chair in a living room, reading corner, or study, providing contrast against contemporary neutral walls and modern textiles.

Clean the wooden frame using a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly, whilst vacuuming the upholstery gently with a soft brush attachment to prevent dust accumulation.
