A large and finely painted Paris porcelain trinket box, attributed to the Samson manufactory, circa 1850. Made in imitation of Louis XV period Sèvres snuff boxes, this example displays a distinctive rococo serpentine form with gilt-bronze mount. The lid is painted in vibrant enamels with a central urn of fruit flanked by floral garlands, butterflies, and scrolling blue acanthus motifs. The sides are adorned with birds and flowers amidst flowing ribbons. The interior is glazed white.
The underside bears the Samson mark — a blue pseudo-monogram resembling “A” within a loop, above a purple “K”. This mark is recorded as a known variant used by Edmé Samson’s workshop, which specialised in 18th-century revival wares for the collector market.
Comparable examples are held in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, and illustrated in G. de Bellaigue, Les Samson – Imitateurs d’Art, 1980. Plate 45 of this publication shows a related box in similar style and decoration.
