An etagere is a piece of furniture featuring open tiers of shelves used to display decorative objects or store light household items. Originating in 18th-century France, it became widely adopted in Britain during the Victorian era as open display furniture grew fashionable in domestic drawing rooms.

Mid-19th-century etageres were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. Cabinetmakers utilised hand-cut joinery, shaped scroll or turned supports, and solid wood veneers over pine or oak carcases, often finished with brass castors at the base.

Authentic Victorian examples show signs of period construction, including hand-planed underside surfaces, original brass castors, and natural patination along the wood grain. The timber should exhibit the deep coloration and weight characteristic of 19th-century imported West Indian or South American mahogany.

A three-tier etagere functions as versatile occasional furniture in contemporary spaces, serving as a side table beside seating, a plant stand, or a compact bar cart. Its open construction provides functional storage while maintaining visual transparency across room layouts.

Dust the surfaces regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth along the direction of the wood grain. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the protective finish, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration.
