Early-18th Century French School, Ex-voto Portrait with Emilian Jacobin, the Virgin Mary, Christ & Angels - Antique Oil Painting

18th century
For Sale by Brave Fine Art
Description

This splendid early 18th-century French oil painting represents an ‘ex-voto’ with Emilian Jacobin and a depiction of the Virgin Mary with Christ and angels.

Ex votos are votive offerings, usually in the form of paintings or carvings, given to a saint or divine figure as a symbol of gratitude for ‘grace received’. Generally confined to Christianity, the term is derived from ‘ex voto suscepto’, which translates as ‘from the vow made’. Votive offerings more broadly are known from the Neolithic period, while ex-votos, such as this, emerged in Italy during the late 15th century.

The concept surrounds the notion of a vow, or pledge, that the votary will deliver an ‘ex-voto’ in exchange for divine assistance. For example, this could relate to a specific illness, the impending birth of a child, or a matter of deep pecuniary woe. In Mexico, even today, ex-votos are sometimes offered following an accident whereby the sufferer has made a fortunate recovery.

Here, in this example from 1712, ‘Emilian Jacobin’, is portrayed with an image of the Virgin Mary, Christ and Angels. A Latin inscription above his open palm refers to ‘Pro G.R.’ or Pro Gratia Recepta, which translates as For Grace Received. His vow is unclear, but it’s conceivable that, given his outfit, he’s a local dignitary showing gratitude for his success. We’ve been unable to trace the coat of arms in the top left due to its similarity with numerous examples from France and Italy. He appears to be holding a tricorn under his right arm.

It’s a particularly unusual piece. We’ve never seen another quite like it.

Held in a later frame.

An ex-voto painting is a devotional artwork created to fulfill a vow or express gratitude for a favour or divine intervention. Popular from the 17th to 19th centuries across Catholic Europe, these works typically feature the donor alongside holy figures such as the Virgin Mary or patron saints.

Artists during this period primarily painted with oil pigments ground with linseed or walnut oil onto stretched linen canvas or wooden panels. Frames were typically crafted from timber, often carved, gilded, or painted with decorative borders.

Authentic 18th-century paintings often display natural craquelure across the paint surface, historic stretcher bar marks, and aged canvas backings showing dark oxidisation. Inscriptions, heraldic coats of arms, or explicit dates painted into the composition also help establish period authenticity.

An antique portrait can serve as a focal point above a console table or mantelpiece in both traditional and eclectic modern interiors. Combining dark, historical artwork with minimalist furnishings creates a structured contrast that highlights the pieces classical character.

Position the canvas away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding damp cloths or chemical cleaning agents which can damage historical varnish.
