19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

This exceptional and rare antique Victorian brooch has been crafted in 9ct yellow gold with a silver setting.

This antique diamond brooch is modelled in the form of a mandolin.

The body of the mandolin is embellished with thirty-six pavé set Dutch cut diamonds.

The stringed musical instrument is further ornamented with a yellow gold headstock, neck/fret band and strings.

The brooch secures to the reverse with a hinged pin and clasp fastening with the additional security of a fine link safety chain.

This antique 1890s brooch is supplied with an IDGL diamond grading report card.

The brooch has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 9ct gold and silver.

This Victorian diamond mandolin brooch is a whimsical and refined gift, perfect for music lovers, musicians, antique jewellery collectors or as a romantic gesture imbued with artistic elegance.

Images do not always reflect the true colour and brilliance of gemstones and diamonds. The video however provides a truer representation of the actual colour and showcases each stone.

Condition

This original antique brooch is exceptional quality, set with impressive diamonds displaying a fine white colour and brilliance; as often the case with smaller Dutch cut diamonds they bear a lower clarity grade of P1/P2, however, they create an aesthetically pleasing antique appearance.

The brooch is an exceptional gauge of gold and silver and in exceptional condition.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine example of antique diamond jewellery/estate jewelry.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian period, motif and novelty jewellery gained popularity, featuring subjects such as musical instruments, animals, and sporting equipment crafted from precious metals and gemstones.

Pieces from this era frequently combined 9ct or 15ct yellow gold with silver settings for diamonds, alongside hand-drawn wirework and delicate fabrication techniques.

Authentic items often feature long pin stems, simple C-clasp closures, period purity stamps or hallmarks, and hand-cut diamonds in silver-topped mountings.

An antique brooch can be worn on a blazer lapel, secured to a silk neck scarf, pinned to the collar of a tailored shirt, or affixed to an evening bag.

Clean gently using a soft brush with lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, ultrasonic baths, and excessive moisture near delicate claw settings.
