Pair of Mercury Mirrored Glass Pendant Lights. Circa 1920

Description

Double layered blown glass shades, with mercury silvering to the inside and a quilted pattern to the outside. Lovely patination, giving out a beautiful dappled light. Complete with their original brass pierced galleries and chain. Fully re wired with new silk braid, new vintage style LED bulbs and ceiling rose. PAT safety tested ready to install and enjoy.

20cm Diameter shade. Shown with an approximate drop of 60cm. Fully adjustable according to the chain length.

Mercury glass pendant lights, also known as silvered glass lights, feature blown double-walled glass shades injected with a liquid silvering solution between the layers to create a reflective mirror surface designed to maximize illumination.

These shades were manufactured by blowing two layers of glass with a small air gap between them, filling the internal cavity with a silver nitrate or mercury solution, sealing the access hole, and topping the structure with a brass gallery fitting.

Authentic pieces display double-walled glass construction, a sealed pontil hole at the base or rim where the silver solution was introduced, minor internal flaking or foxing of the silver layer, and heavy brass gallery fittings.

A pair of silvered glass pendant lights can be suspended above a kitchen island, dining table, or long hallway to act as striking focal points that scatter light and add reflective texture.

Dust the exterior surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or submersion in water, as moisture entering any unsealed areas can damage the internal reflective silvering.
