This finely modeled pair of porcelain figures, attributed to the esteemed Samson manufactory of Paris, circa 1850, depict two charming female street vendors attired in detailed 18th-century costumes. The figure on the right, dressed elegantly in pink, represents a vendor likely offering small metal hardware items, such as scissors, keys, or hooks, traditionally hung from metal belt hooks secured at her waist. A comparable figurine, described as a ''Haberdashery Vendor'' from the 1850s, resides in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (inventory no. OA 1234). Notably, a similar Samson figure sold for €6,200 at Tajan''s auction in 2017.
The second figure, elegantly attired in a tricorn hat and a short cape, is presumed to depict a perfume vendor, delicately holding a small fragrance bottle. Both portrayals vividly illustrate the attire and lifestyle of urban working women and street traders, a common theme in 18th-century French and English street iconography.
The bases of both figures bear the distinctive Samson factory mark in underglaze blue. Founded in 1845 by Edmé Samson, the Samson porcelain factory achieved acclaim for its exceptional recreations of 18th-century European ceramics, notably Meissen, Sèvres, Derby, Chelsea, and Worcester. Recognized for their superior craftsmanship, Samson porcelains have become highly collectible among discerning collectors.
