Two Samson Porcelain Figures – Street Vendors, Circa 1850

19th century
Description

This finely modeled pair of porcelain figures, attributed to the esteemed Samson manufactory of Paris, circa 1850, depict two charming female street vendors attired in detailed 18th-century costumes. The figure on the right, dressed elegantly in pink, represents a vendor likely offering small metal hardware items, such as scissors, keys, or hooks, traditionally hung from metal belt hooks secured at her waist. A comparable figurine, described as a 'Haberdashery Vendor' from the 1850s, resides in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris (inventory no. OA 1234). Notably, a similar Samson figure sold for €6,200 at Tajan's auction in 2017.

The second figure, elegantly attired in a tricorn hat and a short cape, is presumed to depict a perfume vendor, delicately holding a small fragrance bottle. Both portrayals vividly illustrate the attire and lifestyle of urban working women and street traders, a common theme in 18th-century French and English street iconography.

The bases of both figures bear the distinctive Samson factory mark in underglaze blue. Founded in 1845 by Edmé Samson, the Samson porcelain factory achieved acclaim for its exceptional recreations of 18th-century European ceramics, notably Meissen, Sèvres, Derby, Chelsea, and Worcester. Recognized for their superior craftsmanship, Samson porcelains have become highly collectible among discerning collectors.

Height: 14.8 cm

Condition: woman in a scarf - previously she apparently had some objects attached to a metal belt, now there is nothing. On the left hand, which is behind her back, the tip of the thumb is chipped off, otherwise excellent antique condition. The paint, enamel and gilding are all in excellent condition. The woman in the hat - a piece of the hat is chipped off, otherwise all in excellent antique condition.

The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Manufactured in Paris from the mid-19th century onwards by Edme Samson et Cie, these figures were high-quality porcelain reproductions inspired by famous 18th-century factories such as Meissen, Derby, and Chelsea.

These figures are constructed from hard-paste porcelain, painted by hand with overglaze enamels, and detailed with gilding upon moulded, pierced scrollwork bases.

Samson items typically feature hard-paste ceramic bodies rather than the soft-paste bodies of 18th-century originals, along with characteristic pseudo-marks or S marks painted on the base.

Position the figures on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or inside a glazed display cabinet alongside antique glass and hardback books to create a curio-inspired focal point.

Remove surface dust using a dry, soft-bristled brush. Avoid immersing the figures in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, which can degrade the painted enamel surfaces and gilding.
