Robert Belcher Antiques has dated this piece to the Regency era.
It is made from highly figured timber with a stylish brass mounted handle decorated with ringed mouldings for grip. Just in front, there is a steel hinged lever which is attached to a thin steel rod which is inlaid into the timber shaft along its full length and connects at the opposite end to the spring loaded pinching mechanism which has two slender fingers that close together when the lever is operated in a pinching grip which can easily hold a small to medium book making this an essential and useful tool for a large library.
