Large Late 18th Century Mahogany & Brass Bound Oval Cellarette or Wine Cooler of Fine Patina

18th century
Description

A late 18th century (circa 1780) mahogany and brass bound oval cellarette or wine cooler of fine patina and large proportions.

This cellarette consists of a finely figured, faded mahogany top with moulded edge leading down to a brass band supporting the frieze with fine quality brass knob handle, the top opening to reveal the original lead liner for storage of a number of bottles.

The body of the cellarette is of oval form with brass band to both the top and bottom with original brass handles to either side, all supported on four tapered legs with cup brass castors.

This cellarette is in very good original condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home – it is ideal storage for bottles or would also make a great wine or lamp table etc.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cellarette, also known as a wine cooler, is a decorative wooden storage chest created in the eighteenth century to store and chill wine or spirits in dining rooms.

Georgian cellarettes were primarily crafted from dense woods such as mahogany, walnut, or satinwood, reinforced with brass bands, side handles, and occasionally interior metal linings.

Authentic eighteenth-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-fitted brass bands, original lock mechanisms, and uneven patination across the timber surfaces.

An antique cellarette can be placed in a dining area, hallway, or living space to serve as an accent side piece, a standalone decorative statement, or a functional drinks cabinet.

Keep the wood nourished with periodic applications of beeswax polish, avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, and gently clean the brass elements with a soft dry cloth.
