Large Farmyard Scene Oil Painting by Arthur Charles Dodd

19th century
Description

A fine oil on canvas depicting a scene of cattle in a farmyard by Arthur Charles Dodd (fl.1878-1890). The work beautifully shows dairy cattle leaving the farm in a morning to graze in the pasture, probably in Kent. The quality of the work is particularly good in the depiction of the animals which are wonderfully observed. The painting is signed to the lower right ‘A.C.Dodd’. Arthur Charles Dodd was a noted painted from Tunbridge Wells of hunting, animal, landscape and rustic scenes. He exhibited prolifically and widely around the country including at The Royal Academy, The Royal Society of British Artists, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham, his work is routed in the rural romantic realism of the later nineteenth century. The painting is in good original condition with a couple of small pieces of touching in. The gilt frame is of substantial size and great quality; it is the original and has had some restoration over the years and is overgilt. The whole is a wonderful painting with a sense of rural peace and tranquillity. C.1880.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian pastoral paintings typically focus on realistic rural scenes, depicting farmyard life, livestock, and natural landscapes. These works often emphasised agrarian heritage and agricultural subjects, rendered with detailed brushwork and warm, earthy colour palettes.

Artwork from this period was primarily executed using oil paints on stretched linen or cotton canvas. Frames were typically constructed from carved wood or molded gesso plaster coated in gold leaf gilding.

Authentic paintings from this period generally display natural craquelure across the paint surface, age-appropriate darkening on the reverse of the canvas, and hand-moulded or gilt wooden framing with historical joinery.

A large framed pastoral painting functions well when hung above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. Pairing traditional oil art with modern minimal furniture creates a curated, layered interior aesthetic.

Keep the canvas out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent pigment fading and cracking. Dust the frame and surface lightly with a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or water.
