Primitive American Rocking Chair

19th century
Description

A good example of an early American rocking chair dating from the beginning of the 19th Century. It is a primitive ladderback design with two shaped splats. It stands on square legs joined by turned stretchers that sit on long shaped rockers. It retains its original woven hickory splint seat and original red painted finish which has worn attractively over the years to create a wonderful patina.

It is in good original condition and is strong and sturdy with no signs of worm. There are of course signs of age and use, some marks and light knocks and wear to the paint but no major damages or anything detrimental. The original seat is showing signs of wear and there are some breaks to some of the strips (see photo) but overall it displays well.

It is a small size, either for a small adult or large child! The chair stands approximately 34 1/4" (87cm) high. The rockers are 26" (66cm) long and 18 1/2" (47cm) wide.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Primitive rocking chairs are handcrafted utilitarian seating pieces created during the 18th and 19th centuries, characterised by simple joinery, native timber construction, and functional design without ornate embellishments.

These chairs typically utilise local hardwoods or softwoods such as pine, oak, and maple for the structural frame, paired with woven hickory splint, rush, or timber slats for the seat.

Authentication relies on examining structural construction, including hand-shaped mortise and tenon joints, irregular timber pegs, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and original milk paint or layered finishes.

Position the chair as a standalone accent feature in neutral living spaces, reading nooks, or bedrooms to provide textural contrast and historical context alongside contemporary furnishings.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth, keep away from direct heat sources to prevent timber warping or splint desiccation, and avoid chemical solvents that strip historical paint layers.
