Vase, Wmf,silver Plated, Jersey, Battle of the Flowers

1900 - 1920
Description

This superb stamped WMF large silver plated flower vase is a most desirable piece in its own right. It is a tall, elegant twin handled silver plated vase with floral decoration on the lower body neck, and handles. The focal point of this impressive vase is the finely detailed cast figure mounted to the front which depicts a pretty young lady with a basket of flowers with two doves. The vase has its original cut glass liner which makes this decorative piece practical to use. The historical element of this vase is that it is an important piece of Jersey history. In 1902 when King Edward VII came to the throne the people of Jersey held a large and flamboyant celebration entitled the Battle of the Flowers where participants decorated their floats with amazing floral displays and paraded them through the streets in competition and at the end the spectators were encouraged in the practice of tearing and throwing the flowers from the floats, hence the name Battle of the Flowers. This remarkable piece was given to the owner of the winning float in 1923 and presented by W E Guiton Esq. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of Jersey history with a horticultural flower connection.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau metalwork is defined by flowing whiplash curves, organic natural forms, and figurative motifs inspired by flora and foliage. Popularised in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this design movement emphasised asymmetry and seamless integration between functional structure and sculptural decoration.

Manufacturers like WMF predominantly used electroplated Britannia metal, a tin-based alloy, finished with silver plating or gilding. These cast metal frames were frequently fitted with removable clear or tinted glass liners to protect the interior from water damage and corrosion.

Authentic pieces typically bear stamped maker marks on the base, such as the running ostrich logo or stamped letters like WMF, EP, or I/O, which indicate electroplating thickness. Casting quality, crisp relief detailing on figurative elements, and precise fit of original glass liners also distinguish genuine items.

Position the piece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table against a plain wall to highlight its sculptural silhouette. Pair it with natural timber surfaces or contemporary stone to balance the reflective metallic finish and intricate metalwork details.

Dust the frame gently with a soft microfibre cloth and wash glass liners separately using warm water and mild detergent. Apply non-abrasive silver polish sparingly with a soft cloth to avoid wearing down thin electroplated layers.
