Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, German manufactories in regions such as Thuringia became renowned for producing hard-paste porcelain statuettes. Companies like Volkstedt crafted detailed figures portraying pastoral scenes, allegorical subjects, and everyday character studies for decorative household display.

These items were crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay cast in plaster moulds. After an initial bisque firing, artisans applied hand-painted overglaze enamel pigments and liquid gold accents before a final glaze firing to seal the decoration.

Authenticity is verified by checking underglaze factory marks on the base, assessing the fineness of hand-painted brushwork, and inspecting natural age wear along unglazed foot rims and gilding.

Small porcelain statuettes function well as accent pieces when placed on a mantelpiece, integrated into a curated bookshelf arrangement, or displayed within a glass cabinet to contrast against clean contemporary lines.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid immersing the item in water or using abrasive chemical detergents, as moisture can compromise delicate overglaze enamels or historical repairs.
