Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire pottery figures are earthenware decorative ornaments created in Staffordshire, England, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While seated spaniels are the most common, various dog breeds including Dalmatians, greyhounds, and poodles were produced as matching pairs for home display.

These figures were press-moulded in ceramic sections using local white or cream earthenware clay. After an initial firing, they received a clear lead glaze and were finished with hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration and metallic lustre details.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces typically feature press-moulded seams, small air release holes, and slight irregularities in the hand-painted enamel details. The underside often shows fine glaze crazing, unglazed firing rims, and an absence of modern factory stamps or uniform casting marks.

Pairing ceramic figures on a fireplace mantelpiece or arranging them symmetrically on a sideboard or open bookcase creates balance. They complement traditional English interior schemes as well as contemporary eclectic settings.

Dust figures regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. Avoid submerging porous earthenware in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as water can penetrate fine surface crazing and damage overglaze enamel paintwork.
