Joseph Chamberlain 1836-1914 , was one of the most important British politicians of his day despite never being prime minister. Winston Churchill said of him that he ' made the political weather.'

A very successful businessman with non-conformist roots, he then turned his considerable energies to local politics, making many positive reforms in the city of Birmingham. The municipalization of local utilities, forcing slum clearance and improving city housing, expanding free education for children of the city and founding the free art gallery and museum there. These pioneering changes vaulted him to national political prominence.

He was an ardent Imperialist and constructive radical who cared more for pragmatism and successful results than ideology.

Joseph Chamberlain split both major British political parties in the course of his career. First a radical liberal, then a Liberal unionist (after opposing home rule in Ireland), then a leading Imperialist in a conservative coalition.

His youngest son Neville Chamberlain did become prime minister.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vesta case, or match safe, is a small portable container produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries designed to keep friction matches dry. Novelty versions were cast into decorative forms such as portraits, animals, or everyday objects.

Vesta cases were commonly constructed from brass, nickel-plated base metal, sterling silver, or vulcanite, frequently featuring ribbed striking surfaces integrated into the base or side.

Authentic period pieces display age-appropriate wear, crisp casting detail, functional spring-hinged lids, and built-in match-striking surfaces along the outer edges or base.

Compact metal antiques are frequently styled inside glazed display cabinets, arranged on brass trays across a desk surface, or mounted within shadow-box frames.

Dust gently using a soft microfibre cloth and avoid aggressive metal cleaners or abrasive polishes, which can strip away original electroplated layers and historical patination.
