Victorian Naval Sextant

19th century
Description

A good example of a genuine antique Sextant dating from the late 19th Century. It has a 3-ring frame and a silvered and brass scale reading to 150 degrees. It comes with all of its original lenses plus sunshades, mirrors and movable scale reader arm.

The scale is engraved with the name ; "Newton. London. 7524" and inside the box is an original maker / retailer's label for "J.Sewill, Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty. Manufacturing Nautical Optician. 61 South Castle Street. Liverpool".

The sextant comes in its original fitted wooden case with sections to hold the lenses and accessories. It has two brass closing latches, a recessed military style carrying handle and it comes with its original key. Given the handle and the Sewill label I wouldn't be surprised if this were a Naval piece.

The sextant is in good condition for its age. It has been lightly cleaned and displays very well. The lenses and mirrors are undamaged and produce a clear image with the original sighting lines. All parts move as they should. There is some tarnishing and wear on the finish in places but overall it displays well. The box is not without some small knocks, splits and some minor signs of age but overall it has a nice aged patina. I have not tested the accuracy of the sextant and it is being sold as a collectors item rather than a working scientific instrument.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
