Gillers Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the 1850s.
The horses’ manes and tails display masterful incised texture, conveying fluid movement. Each 12.5 cm figure stands on a 10 × 5 cm oval base richly molded with Staffordshire’s signature floral and geometric relief. One figure bears a discrete professional repair to the head; the companion remains in original condition with only a few imperceptible paint losses. Unmarked as was customary for Royal Staffordshire, these rare small-scale animalier works exemplify Victorian England’s fascination with exotic military heroes.
