Staffordshire Porcelain Figures of Omar Pasha on Horseback, England C. 1850

19th century
Description

A superb mid-Victorian pair of Staffordshire porcelain statuettes depicts Ottoman Field Marshal Omar Pasha (1806–1871), born Mihailo Latas in Croatia and famed for his Crimean War leadership, astride compact pink-and-white horses. His red cloak and turban, green saddle accoutrements and black riding boots are finely rendered in polychrome slip-glaze. The horses’ manes and tails display masterful incised texture, conveying fluid movement. Each 12.5 cm figure stands on a 10 × 5 cm oval base richly molded with Staffordshire’s signature floral and geometric relief. One figure bears a discrete professional repair to the head; the companion remains in original condition with only a few imperceptible paint losses. Unmarked as was customary for Royal Staffordshire, these rare small-scale animalier works exemplify Victorian England’s fascination with exotic military heroes.

Shipped fully tracked and insured.
