Designers like Rene Lalique shifted glassmaking from traditional blown forms to sculptural, textured objects featuring frosted finishes, relief carving, and coloured patination.

Pieces were produced using heavy metal moulds into which molten glass was pressed or blown under pressure. Once cooled, hand-refining techniques including acid-etching, wheel-carving, enamelling, or applying coloured stains were added to highlight the relief decoration.
