A Pair of Coalport Porcelain Nantgarw Style Cabinet Cups & Stands C.1820

Description

A very fine pair of John Rose Coalport porcelain, Nantgarw style Cabinet Cups & Stands c.1820. Each cabinet cup of slightly flared U-shape with twin gilded gryphon handles, applied in high relief with garlands of flowers left in the white against white ground, their centres picked out in gold, sprays of brightly painted roses.

A similarly shaped cabinet cup and stand was sold in by Bonhams as Nantgarw on 02 December 2009 (lot 235)

William Billingsley left Nantgarw in 1820 and entered into the Employment of John Rose at Coalport. Whilst there is nothing to confirm that John Rose purchased the moulds from Nantgarw after the closure of the factory, we do know that Rose was keen to emulate the fine porcelains produced at Nantgarw and therefore closely copied quite a few of the shapes and the decoration.  There is also no firm evidence of Billingsley having decorated any factory ware at Coalport, although he was probably employed as an instructor and foreman to direct and superintend work in the painting room. It is likely that some pieces from the 1820's may have been painted by or where heavily influenced by Billingsley's painting style.

Condition: Very good with the exception of one small chip to the underside of one of the stands. A few small typical flea bite chips to the relief flowers. No further damage or restoration.
