Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fireplace fenders emerged in the late seventeenth century as metal borders placed around the hearth. Designed primarily to contain coal or wood embers and protect surrounding flooring, they quickly evolved into decorative architectural features in grand reception rooms during the Georgian and Victorian eras.

High-end nineteenth-century fenders were typically constructed from polished steel, wrought iron, and cast or stamped brass. Steel provided structural rigidity and weight along the base, while decorative elements such as rails, finials, and corner mounts were cast in brass.

Authentic period fenders feature substantial weight, hand-finished metal joins, and signs of genuine age such as light surface oxidisation or minor pitting. Cast brass elements, such as figurative mounts or lions, display sharp hand-chased details rather than soft, mass-moulded edges seen in modern reproductions.

A metallic fender serves as a grounding focal point for a living room hearth. It can be paired with modern or period fireside tools and framed by contrasting hearth tiles, bridging traditional period features with clean contemporary upholstery.

Maintain steel surfaces by wiping with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax to prevent moisture rust. Clean brass components with a specialized brass polish applied gently, ensuring polish does not build up in detailed relief work.
