Antique Quimper French Faience Dish ~ "Pornic"

19th century
Description

A most attractive Late 19th Century Antique Quimper French Faience Dish. Naively painted in a traditional palette with a figure of a Petite Bretonne, standing, facing to the right amidst demi-fantaisie holding her posy of flowers, the whole within a border of couronnes. The title, clearly refers to Pornic on the Jade Coast, a much-loved seaside resort in Loire-Atlantique, which  has the look and feel of Brittany, of which it used to be part until the 1960's. Unmarked, as was much Quimper faience.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Quimper faience refers to hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware ceramics produced in Brittany, France, originating in the late seventeenth century. The pottery traditionally features regional Breton figures, floral borders, and polychrome glazes.

French faience is crafted from an earthenware clay body coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Artisans hand-paint motifs directly onto the unfired glaze before firing, creating a durable glossy finish.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted decoration with minor brushwork variations, painted factory marks or regional names on the base or front, and fine crazing or pinholes within the tin glaze.

Incorporate a faience dish as a decorative focal point on a sideboard, display it on an open kitchen dresser, or mount it within a gallery wall arrangement alongside modern artwork.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, soaking, or mechanical dishwashers, and protect the ceramic from severe temperature shifts.
