P A Oxley Antique Clocks & Barometers has dated this piece to the 1800s.
The thermometer scale calibrated from 20º to 100º Fahrenheit. The hygrometer can be found to the centre of the case below the removable thermometer box which is a very unusual and rare position. The level to the base of the barometer is signed with the makers name and address. The very well proportioned mahogany case of superb colour with ebony and boxwood edge inlay. The swan neck top with central brass finial.
Note: Richard Austen Maltwood worked at several different locations throughout London during the first part of the 19th century. In the 1851 Census he is listed as working at 148 St John’s Street, Finsbury, aged 58 and is listed as a Mathematical Instrument Maker. We believe that the unusual engraving to the main dial depicting a gauntleted arm with the hand holding a sword is the Heraldic Crest of the Richardson family.
