Poirot Art Deco has dated this piece to the 1930s.
Gertrude was born in Bradford and trained at Bradford School of Art.
It was at the art school she met Henry Walton 1876 - 1959 whom she married in 1899.
They both were from similar prosperous middle class backgrounds.
In 1901 they settled near Charmouth in West Dorset. The 1911 census list them both as ‘Artists’
specifying they were painters. They were reportedly involved in the local area in craft design
(silver & copper work, leather and embroidery.
In 1913 their son Geo?rey was born.
Henry became more involved in agricultural matters eventually becoming the first permanent
secretary of the Hampshire branch of National Farmers Union. This led them to move to
Winchester.
It was here that Gertrude taught at Clayesmore School Winchester between 1928-1934.
They both exhibited at the Winchester Art Club which also had works by Eric Ravilious and
William Dring.
Gertrude died in 1951
Their son Geoffrey became a literary scholar and critic, matriculated in 1932 from Downing College Cambridge.
