A Fine Pair of London Decorated Nantgarw Porcelain Plates C.1818-22

Description

A fine pair of Nantgarw porcelain plates, circa 1818-22. Each plate finely potted with shell-moulded rims with twelve equal lobes, the cavetto very finely painted in London, probably by the Bradley workshop, with full floral sprays, including two superbly painted roses, chrysanthemums, bluebell and morning glory, within a blue enamel line in Sèvres style and surrounded by scattered insects, the borders with five smaller sprays and dentil gilt rim, two further insects on the underside of one, 23.2cm diam, impressed NANT-GARW CW

Regency porcelain, produced between roughly 1811 and 1830, is distinguished by soft-paste body compositions, translucent glassy glazes, elaborate gilding, and precise botanical enamel paintings executed by specialized porcelain painters.

Soft-paste porcelain was produced using a mixture of white clay, crushed glass or frit, bone ash, and chalk fired at lower temperatures than hard-paste porcelain, resulting in a translucent body decorated with overglaze enamels and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit characteristic translucency under direct light, slight fire cracks or warping from high kiln losses, impressed factory marks, hand-applied gilding showing natural rubbing, and specific regional style characteristics in the enamel painting.
