FAQs

Transferware was developed in England during the late 18th century as a method to replicate hand-painted blue and white porcelain more efficiently. Copper plates were engraved with detailed designs, printed onto tissue paper, and transferred onto earthenware vessels prior to firing and glazing.

During the early 19th century, manufacturers used fine earthenware or pearlware coated with a lead glaze. Cobalt oxide was predominantly used for the underglaze decoration because it remained stable at high kiln firing temperatures.

Authentic period pieces typically feature impressed maker marks, such as WEDGWOOD, pressed directly into the damp clay body on the underside. Pattern names, registration marks, or printed backstamps may also accompany the impressed factory mark.

A complete tableware collection can be displayed in a glazed dress-front cabinet or styled across a long dining table as a central decorative theme. Individual platters and tureens also serve as decorative accents on sideboards or mantelpieces.

Hand washing in warm water with a mild liquid detergent is recommended to preserve the glaze and earthenware body. High-heat dishwashers and microwave use should be avoided to prevent thermal shock, glaze crazing, or staining.
