Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror designed specifically to hang above a fireplace chimneypiece. Originating in the seventeenth century and reaching peak popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, these mirrors were constructed to reflect light from candles and hearths throughout a room.

Nineteenth-century mirrors of this style were typically crafted using a carved pine or lime wood frame coated with gesso, a smooth mixture of chalk and binder. Intricate ornamental details, such as scrolling foliage and crests, were moulded from plaster or gesso before being painted or gilded.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display natural age-related wear, such as subtle cracking in the gesso (crazing), timber shrinkage along frame joints, and light foxing on the glass plate. Additionally, backboards on genuine period mirrors usually feature dark, oxidised timber secured with hand-cut nails.

A large painted overmantel mirror serves as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, balancing contemporary minimalist furniture with historical texture. Alternatively, it can be mounted above a hallway console table or placed against a neutral feature wall to maximise light and visual space.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve historic gesso or loosen delicate paint flakes. Clean the glass sparingly with a damp microfibre cloth, ensuring moisture does not seep into the frame rebate.
