A stylish early C19th Regency period gilt-wood framed overmantel mirror in the fashionable ‘Retour D’Egypte’ taste of the era.

Of rectangular landscape proportions, the gilded frame having an inverted break-front cavetto cornice with multiple closely-spaced spheres . The uprights modelled as Egyptian caryatid or herm figures , the tops having well-sculpted ebonised heads in traditional dress , the tapering stiles with intricate carved designs, the bases with ebonised carved human feet.

The base with carved horizontal leaf design and having beaded mouldings to the edges .

The original silvered single-piece mirror plate having some atmospheric degradation , speckles and foxing .

Verso with original backboards and bearing partial paper trade label reading “JEWELL & CO…LOOKING GLASSES “

In excellent original condition with no losses or damage , the original gilded surface having a mellow colour and patina.

*The Egyptian style became fashionable in the early part of the C19th under the influences of designers and architects such as Thomas Hope , who revisited the ancient culture of the Egypt . In addition the victory of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson against the Napoleonic forces of the French at the Battle of the Nile increased the popularity, interest and celebration of the style .
